It is not a secret anymore, laptops are some of the most popular devices used nowadays. A large number of people use them because they can be taken everywhere and they fulfill the same purposes as a full desktop.

Nonetheless, laptop use has its own downsides. One of them is the fact that they can run out of battery in some of the most inappropriate moments. This article aims to provide a few useful guidelines on how to preserve your laptop battery fully functional for a long time.

Avoid overheating - Most people tend to forget that a battery heats very fast, especially if the laptop faces high usage. Nonetheless, higher operating temperatures diminish the overall efficiency of the device, hence the demand for additional battery power. In time, this will shorten the battery's life. To avoid this it is important that you allow your laptop to cool. Also, remember to avoid battery exposure directly to the sunlight.

Do not drain your battery completely - When I say this I refer to the modern lithium ion batteries, which can be discharged partially and then recharged without any harmful effects. Such an action will not harm the battery. On the contrary, it will extend its life span. However, note that laptops that use nickel-based batteries have to be completely drained and recharged.

Use the device's original adapter - It is common for many people to use AC adapters or battery chargers that are not original just because they are cheaper. However, such adapters will reduce the life of your battery so it is advisable that you ask your manufacturer for a new one. The cost might be higher but the damage will be minimum.

Ensure proper storage - If you plan not to use your laptop for more than a week, then take the battery out of it and store it in a cool and dry place. Leaving your battery in the laptop for a long time is not recommended. Before you remove it, make sure it is discharged to around 40 percent of the full capacity. The battery's charge situation can be seen by clicking the battery status icon on your laptop's desktop.

Keep your battery clean - As with many other electronic devices, laptops accumulate dirt, particularly dust particles. This may cause problems in their proper functioning. That is why you need to cleanse them periodically. Laptop battery cleansing can be done easily with a cotton swab dampened in alcohol. Make sure the battery has been removed from the computer before you start the cleaning process. After you have finished, let the battery dry completely and then put it back in the laptop. The cleansing process has to be executed every two or three months.

Sometimes, even if you take care of your battery properly, your laptop might still have trouble in performing to full capacity. Should this be the case, you need not worry. There are IT specialists, such as it support london, that can help you. They will assess properly the situation and will let you know if you need to purchase a new battery or not.
