The general close-up mode will use a flash, and I've found it works fine to leave it on when taking regular pictures as well. The super close-up does not allow you to use a flash, but it can take closer pictures.
Most of us have been using these for years now; this one takes some time to figure out. Spend some time with the manual to understand its menus and order of operation before taking any high-value pictures.
All I have to do now is wait for my little Cannon Powershot to kick the bucket, Ok so I did some shopping around before I decided on this camera because my old camera broke. Though this camera was more expensive than some of the other camera's I looked at, I chose this one for a couple of reason's over the others: 1. I went surfing with a friend that had this camera and ever since then I wanted, no I NEEDED this camera. Luckily my wife dropped our old camera (from three feet) and the whole thing broke.
Some people incorrectly refer to this is "excessive shutter lag." This is not the case: The default setting for this camera is to display the photo just taken for about four seconds after pressing the shutter button so the user can view the image. Rinsed off the saltwater and took it to the mountains for the long shots. It is small enough for a pocket and great for hiking and backpacking - no worries on dropping.
I did take about 200 shots that were of a comparable quality to the 720, I have not really checked out closely from the memory card. The 1st time I took it in snorkeling at surface level, I got 1 picture and the controls/screen went haywire. I wanted a camera to take in snorkeling and also one that I was not worried about getting wet if caught out in a rain shower. I have a Canon DSLR, but did not want to spend hundreds more for an underwater housing. Although I have retired that particular camera from active duty, it is still in use today with my youngest using it for school projects and such. I have purchased two others since then, both 10 MP models and they are performing flawlessly. If you already are familiar with digital cameras, then one could possibly figure this one out, but instructions basically told you how to open up and charge the battery, nothing about the different modes, and had to go on line to find some adequate instructions. Amazon still has the best deals and pricing for cameras.
I didn't do this and was not actually aware of that. It seems a bit high maintenance. This camera is truly garbage. The Olympus Stylus was the only camera I owned that cracked its LCD - and it didn't even fall. A major reason, the major reason I bought it instead of another standard point and shoot was for the ruggedized features: shock and water proof to 16 feet. As a standard around the house camera it worked fine.
It was in bag that tipped. I am incredibly disappointed in Olympus and this camera.
