You Can Quit Looking Any Further - Business Planning Software Review

A note on upgrading from previous versions: Make sure you have the current backup file where you can find it. The disc walks you through uninstalling the old version, converting your old data to the new version standard, and ultimately installing the 2011 version.

It also runs A LOT slower. With the discontinuing support of Microsoft Money my husband and I needed a new source for our home bookkeeping system.

Attachment Encryption: I'm fairly certain this wasn't in the prior version. I guess you can now password protect attachments. Hours later my stuff is still importing one transaction at a time, and each transaction requires several clicks. This is not going to work for active traders and investors! It has an easy to use interface. It can still run on a computer without internet connection. Well, I hadn't had installed for more than 10-15 minutes when I figured out I could use it to tap into my online banking and credit card accounts and it would automatically sync and import for me. I love that it has a bunch of different categories preloaded to help track expenses, and that it helps track our loans as well. I have been very pleased with this product! It is exactly what I was expecting in Financial Management software, and has been easy to learn how to use.

They took the most useful feature out of the product. I remember when 2010 was being hyped, they showed this new Cash Flow panel with the IN/OUT/REMAINING concept, and I loved it. If you are a Bank of America user anywhere except California, beware. Bank of America does not support Quicken 2011 and is unsure exactly when they will. Of course a spreadsheet could do most of that stuff too. I was hopeful that this version of Quicken would manage my data from Interactive Brokers since it is listed as "supported". Fortunately, Quicken has a setting to take care of this: 1) click on the investment account in the account list, 2) click on the "account actions" button, 3) select "account details", 4) set "show cash in checking account" to "no".

Also, some keyboard shortcuts are now gone. There does not appear to be any way to customize the icons or keyboard shortcuts so that I have my most desired actions available in the account ledger.

I promptly returned (Costco) and reverted back to my earlier version 2010. I know people who find this software useful, and relying on their advice I paid out for it (and it's not cheap). Quicken stacking the deck, it seems to me. I am just getting into it, so I may change my opinion later, but right off the bat there were some serious problems with getting information from my banks. Having paid good money for this software, I'm steamed that they now subject me to ads as well. I don't mind the free-if-you-view-our-ads software business model in general, but do find it offensive if the software cost plenty of money.
