Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury

Shmups are difficult to complete because they are anchored on a coin-op business model that hinges greatly on player collapse. Treasure's games take this ultimate belief by placing the same significance on pleasure and hardcore mental punishment. Even with this lineage the company's Bangai-O series cannot be classified as such. Its viciousness, its insanity and the flames of its bullet hell are uninhibited.

Introducing the XBLA's Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury. It is without a storyline and is full of pure, unadulterated shooter madness.

Staying alive in Missile Fury is unlikely in a normal shmup set-up. Luckily, it can freeze incoming bullets, dash and counter attack in a span. The latter is vital to endurance-- most levels are ridiculously and excessively packed with enemy fire that the player could get lost. Using the counter attack releases many projectiles yet exposes the player while a multiplier builds. Whatever is closest is cleared by counters which a skilled player can use to dash away and plan the next attack. However, this is easier said than done. The game's foolish sense of humor is notable, similar to that found in Mario Party or Super Smash Bros. Many "kill everything on-screen" commands occur and appealing winning provisions are integrated in the design. In one level the player has to run to the bottom to blow up something in an underground compartment; otherwise the player will get trapped below and cannot kill the multitude of enemies above. The player uses only the boost or counters to clear a room. Reaching the "end" of any challenge does not complete the stage.

Treasure is at its height when it is deranged, bending shooter rules hilariously. A favorite is when enemies can only be defeated by bouncing giant soccer balls into them. In another instance, a small, mazelink track wrapped in fierce but hidden enemies has to be steered. (Think board game classic Operation.)

A false sense of security pervades as well. It is very likely that something even larger and more outlandish is lurking to waylay anytime. Shmups are hardcore enough, but Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury serves death la carte and the player can die.

Beware, though, that there can be more deaths.
